Travel supplement - 2012

Some interesting plans again this year.

- Cycling
- Walking
- Lazing and drinking
- Train journey

Cycling
We will open up the caravan at the end of April and do some cycling in Brittany and travel down to La Rochelle and do some more cycling or walking there.

We hope to cycle, with our kit in our panniers, along the voies vertes, to the caravan, by taking a train to Plymouth, the ferry to Roscoff, and cycling through Brittany again this year, probably in August as we enjoyed it so much last year. We may detour along the Brest-Nantes canal for some way to the South, possibly to Lorient, and return to Quimper or Concarneau by train.

Walking
We have signed up to walk about 100 miles of the the Camino de Santiago from Leon, travelling westwards, on June 9 for 10 days. So we are practising like mad. The photo (left) is in January near the top of Penyfan, looking South towards Upper Neuadd and Pontsticill reservoirs. I think that was the day when an army guy in charge of a group of lads warned us that the wind was so high it would be likely to blow us off.

Lots of other lovely walks through the late winter and spring, with beautiful views. Quite muddy in late winter, but dry through March. The picture (right) is from the Devil's Pulpit, above Tintern Abbey, which we walked to from Chepstow, up the Gloucestershire Way to Tidenham Chase, then across to the Offa's Dyke Walk at the Devil's Pulpit. The footpaths were well maintained and marked in Gloucestershire. Some of the worst, we have found, were in the Vale of Glamorgan, where you would think walking was more popular. But they are very well maintained in Caerphilly, where you would think the County would have other priorities.

Lazing and drinking
At the end of August we have our 40th wedding anniversary, at which we will stay in a house, with the family, in the Lot valley, about 4km from Cahors.

Train journey
We have an idea that we would like to go by train overland to Hong Kong. The main part of the route, would therefore be the Trans-Siberian railway from Beijing to St Petersburg. Thinking of next April-May time, to arrive in Moscow or St Petersburg in time for the Russian Orthodox Easter (May 8).

The Government have passed a bill making General Practitioners the lead professionals in purchasing the services run by the NHS. The government believe that GPs know what patients want.... But do they know what they need? Interestingly the government have now retracted from their original plans to some extent, so that hospital doctors and other professionals will be involved in purchasing care. Read
